Makhtest (Crater) Ramon Map
For many years, Ilan Dvir the founder of the farm rode his horse within the crater and its surrounding and discovered amazing places and hiking trails! Some of these trails are suitable for only walking, and others are excellent for bikers, horseback riding and jeeps. For the lovers of the makhtesh, the desert and its magical worlds Ilan created a map for everyone to be able to explore the crater. You can get the map at the farm, shops or hotels in Mitzpe Ramon.
From the farm
The Ramon crater is the largest of the Negev craters, and is characterized with a variety of stunning views and unique geological phenomenon. Such as sand dunes that cross dikes that are millions of years old, colored sand, running water springs, canyons, cliffs and "carpenter hill" a area with unique sandstone and basalt prisms which looks like blocks of wood. The visitor center is an excellent gateway to the Ramon Nature Reserve. There is a stunning display of the area and great visuals to help explain the history and make it accessible to everyone. There is a information desk that can give recommendations on itineraries, walking trails, updates on weather and terrain conditions. Bio Ramon - Living Desert Museum
There are about 40 different species of small desert animals such as reptiles, rodents to name a few, and they are all mostly hidden from the those who do not know where to look. You will learn how these animals learned to adapt to these hard conditions. For more details - 08-6588755
A scenic promenade of about 3 kilometers, beginning at the Visitor Center in Mitzpe Ramon and ends at Camel Mountain. Along the promenade there is a vista point, with sculptures and explanations
From The Alpaca Farm
A sandstone hill with dark stones at the top, reminiscent of boards or wooden pillars scattered on the carpentry floor. A fascinating and rare natural phenomenon worth visiting.
Bor Hemet (cistern)
The Hamat pit is a partially restored water cistern, where you can see the method of collecting rainwater and floods, which are essential for desert agricultural. Alongside the cistern there are also agricultural terraces, which are scattered in the shallow channels and used for ancient agriculture.
From the Alpaca Farm
Chalk wall embedded with ammonites - huge snails - fossilized. The ammonites were water animals that became extinct a million years ago.
In the Negev desert, many Bedouins continue to live by their traditional lifestyle by living in tents, preparing their meals by bonfire, and tending to their herd of sheep and camels. There are several tourist tents that they have so people can get a taste and understanding of the Bedouin lifestyle. The ancient city of Avdat served as a big role in the ancient perfume trading routes between Yemen and Gaza. The city provided a variety of services that can still be seen in the archaeological remains such as - a large winery, wine cellars, warehouses and more! Starting at a cistern from the Nabatean tribes who used it to collect rain water. Walking through the beautiful valleys, you will end at the Avdat National Park. On the way you will see the unique desert vegetation, animals and many different rock layers. Recommended hike during a full moon.
From The Alpaca Farm
A walkway where you will see ancient cisterns, wells and silos that date back over 3000 years, ancient desert remnants and unique desert vegetation to that area.
Western Frontier Road
The Western Frontier Road (Route 10) which extends about 180 km that offers a scenic route that allows for views of the Sinai Peninsula and the central Negev mountains. The road begins at the junction of Highway 12 and Scouts Junction in the south, and continues through Mount Harif, Nitzana, Nitzana Antiquities and Nitzana Corssing. The route ends in the north of the western cluster of villages close to Sinai.
